Gordon Ryan was able to finish Josh Saunders with an outside heel hook. There is a lot to learn from the way Gordon finished the submission as well as how he approached passing the guard. However, the biggest takeaway from the match may be a little sequence where Josh was able to effectively counter Gordon Ryan's inside camping. Lets dive in.

You need to control their hips, in the first clip jozefs grip is tight enough that there's no way christian can turn for a sag headlock or any turn throw for that matter. In the second clip u can see that he momentarily posts on dorseys hips to manage the distance until he's ready to spring on the ouchi.

I feel like the best option to shut down inside camping (from my current experiences) is to move your opponent's head away with a straight shoulder post or a throat post, and then bring your inside leg out, and either switch to a far side K (like Mateusz vs. Levi) or go to a DLR with full outside leg positioning. The longer you let the camper settle into the position, the higher the risk is of you tiring out or over extending your frames and getting countered (in my experience).

@@MadshGrappling yeah theres a couple matches. Owen jones vs dominic meija. Felipe pena vs gordon ryan 3 although gordon ryan seems like he aint trying in the first half. And levi vs mateusz. Thanks for the great insights mate, appreciate the review. Playing with the knee shield underhook combo was to game between a few options knowing he’d just dominate the hip line into mount, which is not where you want to be. Secondly you hit the nail on the head with mateausz far side K being my attempt there but that enabled the RDLR. If only I’d kept my elbow tight to my ribs I believe I could have made that inversion work nicely. That near side wrist freeing the foot / bottom knee is utterly essential. Diego pato does this the best IMO. But again, mr Ryan is very good 😂. Again, appreciate the insights mate, great video.

Not sure you can call it anything too impressive or some counter no one has ever thought of. He basically just goes to a reverse de la riva position when the leg is close enough to grab...nothing extraordinary there. Josh was way too cocky thinking he would make this close and it would help him sell some instructionals about how to get good a JJ really fast. He got completely schooled and I saw nothing other than a big dude being able to use strength to keep a bit of distance while being multiple steps behind until getting subbed.

Josh made some mistakes with his knee shield, he initially seemed have it in so it carried Gordons weight/pressure and then he just let it slide off and kept it on Gordon's hip for a little bit. Which then made it much easier for Gordon to bring Josh's legs together and then pummeled the legs to pass to side control.

Is it just me or at 6:10 does it look like JS could hit a kinda butterfly/shaolin sweep. If JS continues to punch his right hand that is gripping GRs hand between his leg and brings his left hand up to a collar tie that snaps GR down over his left shoulder as JS punches the hand through it would create a possible nice off balance. JS knee shield prevents the smash and provides the anchor so he can rotate his hips out as he inverts while punching his right hand through. If he gets enough off balance he could pike at the end of his inversion to come up on top but my guess is GR either steps up hard with his left leg or brings his right arm across to base allowing JS to get in the on legs.

He should’ve never accepted bottom position and should’ve stepped on the pedal. this has more to do with the relationship with the hand and shoulder line of the person on top, if the hand is forward of the shoulder, grabbing the head, posting on the shoulder, ect, the person on top has 2 things working for them, 1 the ability to stabilize their own balance much easer and creating a far stronger body frame overall. 2 the ability to distribute their weight over a larger mass area, creating elongated pressure. if the hand it behind the shoulder line the position is far weaker, much more unstable and in turn allows the person on bottom more options to counter. the principle of creating instability through structural compromise combined with the principle of off balancing to make a strong position weak is what is needed. hope i explained my thoughts properly :) ps great vid

Nicky definitely trusted his s&c more in this one. The reason he lost the first time was because he didn't trust his conditioning and was too passive, Gordon was also on a smaller dose of gear (obvious from his physique change) which helped. When skill levels are equal or similar, it will come down to strength. Thats why these guys take gear, if strength wasn't important, they wouldn't.
